Mohiniyattam is an Indian classical dance form rooted in the feminine spirit  holds great relevance to not just women across all ages and cultures but society at large. It is a dance form that resonates with great contemporary relevance, as it epitomizes values that can inspire and impact our lives in a direct and tangible way. It is not just an ancient tradition that evolved in the temples of southern India. The dance form therefore can be described as an expression of this feminine force, and can become a powerful tool to raise awareness in the realm of both society and spirituality.

In Hindu spiritual traditions, The sacred Feminine principal is the primordial force and in fact all of manifestation is an expression of Shakti or the Sacred Feminine principal. Shakti is worshiped as the Divine feminine that imbues every living being and deity with energy, power and creativity. Masculine energy in the sense of activity, materiality, and rational thinking has become overvalued at the expense of the more intangible attributes of the feminine principle.

We urgently need to redefine our priorities and see the links between the oppression of women and the feminine principle in general, and the oppression of nature. The feminine principle stands for connectedness and inclusion, instead of divisiveness and separation. It stands for cooperation instead of domination, and for heartfelt embodiment instead of cold aloofness.

The laws of nature will take care of us if we make an effort to cooperate, instead of working against them. The emphasis here is on the process itself rather than on the product, the “how” rather than the “what.”, reminiscent of the technique of Mohiniyattam - which is significantly “process-oriented” rather than “pose-oriented”.  This is yet another strength of the feminine principle. Distinct from the masculine goal-oriented propensity.

The Feminine principle is needed to help us regain balance. She must return in both men and women if we are to create a more peaceful and sustainable future.
